Research Update!

I am delighted to tell you that we are making much progress with the appointment of a senior scientist to lead the brain tumour research lab, which will be based at the internationally renowned Leeds Institute for Molecular Medicine.

Andrea’s Gift and Candlelighters (Leeds based children’s cancer charity) have agreed to jointly fund the lab for a minimum of five years.

As many Andrea’s Gift supporters know, we have been working since 2003 to raise sufficient funds to support the project and the news that work  is likely to commence in 2010 is just fantastic.

In addition to this commitment, there is an event planned for June 2010 called Meek’s Three Peaks which aims to raise an additional £100,000 to fund an additional PhD student to work in the lab.  If you want to support the Brain Tumour Research lab or make a donation to support the Meek’s Three Peaks campaign, follow the appropriate links.

Lord Mayor of Leeds Raises £54,646 for Andrea’s Gift!

I am delighted to tell you that the Lord Mayor of Leeds charity fundraisers collected a staggering £54,646 raised for brain tumour research and patients in Yorkshire through 2008 and 2009.

We are so grateful to Councillor Frank Robinson and his wife Sheila for choosing Andrea’s Gift as their charity of the year, to the great fundraisers in Leeds City Council who supported the charity, in particular Rob Kelly and the guys in ICT Services, John Draper and Christine Mabbett who all organised some fantastic fundraising events. Also, thanks to Stephen McHugh and the Office of Lord Mayor together with the Lord Mayor’s Charity Committee who work so hard to raise funds for the Lord Mayor’s charity. Their help and support was fantastic and without their dedication we would not have received the essential funds that were raised.

This is an amazing amount and helps the charity to progress plans to develop Yorkshire’s first brain tumour research lab, and I hope to bring you more exciting news on that very soon!

Thank you to the 60+ walkers who took part in the Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours event last Sunday – we were blessed with fine weather (for the most part!) and had a lovely day.

We still have a few tickets for the Wine Tasting at Cookridge Hall on Wednesday 21st October, £10.00 pp. Please let Carol  know if you can support this event.

We have now raised almost £870,000 – heading fast for the £1m by 2010!

Thank you to everyone who has made this possible.

You will be able to walk from basecamp straight onto the cliff paths and wherever possible walks will be off roads. A quiz/treasure hunt will be included and there will be a prize giving ceremony.

How will this event raise much needed funds for my favourite brain cancer charity?

You’ll be able to support the brain tumour community twice over! Firstly through seeking sponsorship for your efforts for Andrea’s Gift, whatever the length of walk you opt to do. And secondly, by donating the miles you walk to IBTA, you will be contributing to IBTA’s annual Walk Around the World for Brain Tumours.

This event is being organised by brainstrust on behalf of Brain Tumour Research and its affiliated charities. You will need to register with brainstrust to be able to participate in this event, more information very soon!
